A Different Kind of December: Christmas on the Beach

Christmas on the Shore: A Holiday Wrapped in Sunlight There’s something quietly rebellious about spending Christmas on the beach. While the rest of the world pulls on wool sweaters, warms their hands around mugs of spiced cider, and braces for winter’s bite, you’re standing barefoot in warm sand, with the sun painting everything in gold. The ocean murmurs in the background like an easygoing caroler who only knows one verse but hums it proudly. Christmas ornaments sparkle in palm trees instead of pines. And the only frost you’ll see is the faint mist on the rim of a cold drink pulled from an ice chest. For many people, Christmas is tied tightly to a sense of tradition. Snow. Fireplaces. Cozy nights. A sense of retreat from the cold. I grew up with that version, too. But the first time I celebrated Christmas on the beach, everything I thought I knew about the holiday rearranged itself. It didn’t ruin my childhood nostalgia. It didn’t replace it. Instead, it carved out a warm, sun...

Djokovic sets up a blockbuster at the Alcaraz US Open

Djokovic eliminated Taylor Fritz's chance of becoming the first American man to win a Grand Slam singles title since 2003 with a quarter-final victory of 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

The victory advanced the 38-year-old Serbian, who is pursuing a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title, to a semi-final match against Spanish second seed Alcaraz on Friday.

Djokovic secured his win when Fritz, the fourth seed, double-faulted on match point in the final set's 10th game, expressing relief at his win.

“In this kind of match, a few points on either side decide the winner,” he remarked. “It was an incredibly close match. It was really anybody’s match.”

Fritz reflected on his missed opportunities, converting only two of 13 chances throughout the three-hour and 24-minute match.

He failed to capitalize on five break points in the first set, which would have shifted momentum in his favor.

After leveling the second set at 5-4, Fritz was immediately broken again, allowing Djokovic to take the lead.

Djokovic then maintained his advantage to win the second set, and although Fritz won the third,Djokovic secured the match in the fourth set.

“I thought I was really lucky to save some crucial break points in the second set,” Djokovic noted. “I think for most of the second and third sets he was the better player.”

In the upcoming semi-finals, Djokovic will face Alcaraz, who has not lost a set on his way to this stage. Alcaraz achieved a quick 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Czech 20th seed Jiri Lehecka in just under two hours. He remarked on his match, stating,

“I just played a really — or almost perfect match,” highlighting his strong performance since the Italian Open in May.

“It seems like, OK, just two more steps to do, and let’s see what happens. But yeah, I’m just feeling great and hungry to make it.”
