Nigerian media personality May Edochie is seeking ₦1 billion in damages from her former attorney, Emeka Ugwuonye, claiming that he was involved in cyberbullying, cyberstalking, and disseminating false information about her private family matters.
Actor Yul Edochie’s former wife, May, described Ugwuonye’s actions as a “calculated attack on my reputation” in a cease-and-desist letter sent by her new legal team. The letter stated that his frequent online posts exceeded defamation, promoting the dissemination of damaging information, which resulted in “severe and irreparable harm” to her business, reputation, and safety. “Our client has expressed significant displeasure and concern regarding your ongoing public posts, cyberstalking, and cyberbullying related to her and her private family affairs,” a section of the letter stated. “These posts have been made in a manner that transcends mere defamation, comprising ridicule and harmful behavior, representing a calculated assault on her reputation, and further jeopardizing her safety through malicious threats and demonstrably false allegations instigated by you and at your direction. “Your conduct has also encouraged third parties to disseminate your concerning communications, thereby exacerbating the damage and inflicting severe and irreparable harm on our client.” The media figure also requested the retraction of the posts, a cease-and-desist agreement, and a public apology across all social media platforms. She demanded that her former attorney, Ugwuonye, compensate her with ₦1 billion for “damages due to the malicious publications.” The letter stated that these demands should be met within 48 hours. “Accordingly, we hereby demand that you, within forty-eight (48) hours of receiving this notice,” it further indicated. “Cease and desist from making or publishing any further defamatory or malicious statements against our client, whether directly or indirectly. “Withdraw all posts or publications made by you, or caused by you, regarding our client on every medium utilized in carrying out these defamatory and malicious acts. “Issue a clear and public apology and publish a full retraction of every derogatory statement made against our client on all platforms where such statements were made. “Furthermore, you are hereby required to pay the sum of ₦1,000,000,000.00 (One Billion Naira) as damages for the malicious publications made against our client.” May initiated legal action against her former lawyer after he withdrew from her divorce case against her spouse in July. When Ugwuonye recused himself from the case, he cited “persistent bullying” from a segment of May’s followers identified as “May Nation.” In 2023, May filed for divorce from Yul, seeking ₦100 million in damages. In April 2022, the actor announced Judy Austin as his second wife.
