A Different Kind of December: Christmas on the Beach

Christmas on the Shore: A Holiday Wrapped in Sunlight There’s something quietly rebellious about spending Christmas on the beach. While the rest of the world pulls on wool sweaters, warms their hands around mugs of spiced cider, and braces for winter’s bite, you’re standing barefoot in warm sand, with the sun painting everything in gold. The ocean murmurs in the background like an easygoing caroler who only knows one verse but hums it proudly. Christmas ornaments sparkle in palm trees instead of pines. And the only frost you’ll see is the faint mist on the rim of a cold drink pulled from an ice chest. For many people, Christmas is tied tightly to a sense of tradition. Snow. Fireplaces. Cozy nights. A sense of retreat from the cold. I grew up with that version, too. But the first time I celebrated Christmas on the beach, everything I thought I knew about the holiday rearranged itself. It didn’t ruin my childhood nostalgia. It didn’t replace it. Instead, it carved out a warm, sun...

Oshoala Seals Move To Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal

Nigerian forward Asisat Oshoala has completed a transfer from Bay FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) to Al-Hilal in the Saudi Women’s Premier League. The move was officially announced on September 2, 2025, and involves a two-year contract.

Oshoala joined Bay FC in 2024 during the team’s first NWSL season and quickly became a key player. She scored seven goals that year, including the franchise’s first-ever goal, and finished as the club’s top scorer. However, in 2025, she faced challenges, appearing in only 12 matches, accumulating 458 minutes, and starting only five times without scoring or assisting.

Her limited playing time led to frustrations, with Oshoala expressing earlier in the season that she was “not in the best place” in the league. In April, she alluded to internal issues with a social media post about feeling reluctant to attend work. Reports indicated that efforts to facilitate a move within the NWSL were hindered by her contract, making an international transfer the most feasible option.

In light of her departure, Bay FC acknowledged Oshoala's contributions. Sporting Director Matt Potter commended her professionalism and impact both on and off the pitch, recognizing her role in establishing the club. He wished her well in her new endeavor with Al-Hilal.

The transfer underscores the growth of the Saudi Women’s Premier League, which has been drawing international talent. Oshoala joins fellow Nigerian internationals Ashleigh Plumptre and Francisca Ordega at Al-Hilal, bolstering the team's goals to enhance its status in women’s football across Asia.

Before joining the NWSL, Oshoala had significant success with FC Barcelona, where she won two UEFA Women’s Champions League titles. On the international level, she has been a consistent member of the Nigerian national team, contributing to the Super Falcons' victory in their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title earlier this year. Her numerous individual awards, including six African Women’s Footballer of the Year honors, affirm her status as one of the most celebrated players in African football history.

For Oshoala, this move to Al-Hilal offers an opportunity to revitalize her career while supporting the advancement of women’s football in the Middle East. For Bay FC, her exit creates a notable gap as the club seeks to improve its performance during a challenging season.
